Sifnos Sights & Attractions

The small church of Seven Martyrs has been built on a rocky peninsula right before the entrance to Kastro. Today, it has become the symbol of the whole island.

The Monastery of Panagia Chrissopigi is located on top of a small, rocky peninsula that is connected to the rest of the island with a small bridge. The monastery was established in 1650 and it is considered the protector of the island.

The Archaeological Museum of Sifnos is housed in a fine two-storey mansion in Kastro. It hosts statues from the 6th till the 1st century BC, ceramics and coins.

The Folklore and Popular Art Museum of Sifnos is located in the center of Apollonia, the capital of Sifnos. It hosts exhibits from the traditional life on the island, such as folk costumes, furniture, weapon, agricultural tools, and photographs.

The archaeological site of Agios Andreas was found at the top of a hill on the way to Vathy from Apollonia. The spot was first discovered by Christos Tsountas

It is believed that the towers of Sifnos were built following the invasion of the Samians in order to defend it and be prepared in the case of future attacks. The most famous tower of Sifnos is located on the northeastern side of the island, called Aspros Pyrgos (White Tower).

A small ecclesiastical museum is housed in the Monastery of Panagia Vrysiani, in close distance to Exabela. The museum exhibits clothes of priests, rare books and manuscripts, a gospel of the 18th century and Byzantine icons.

The Monastery of Prophet Elias Ipsilos is located on the highest peak of the island, at an altitude of 690 meters. The complex is surrounded by walls, underground galleries, cells and rooms for the accommodation of visitors.
