The fact of being secluded from the winds is very important especially in summer, when Serifos is subdued to a group of seasonal breezes called ‘Meltemia’, which have the advantage of cooling the heat of the summer but can turn annoying. It is a very quiet location with shiny pebbles and a little sand. Among its few facilities there are some small taverns available for a drink or lunch.
Another positive feature about Koutralas beach is it allows visiting other interesting places, which can be included on the excursion schedule. One of them is the “Kastro tis Grias”, in the village area. It is placed on a hill overlooking the bay of Koutalas, which hosts other antique sites as well, like some old inhabited houses, remains from an old fortification wall, and from an early Christian basilica, on the chapel of Agia Irene. In ancient times, the village of Koutalas used to be very important in terms of economy as it counted on large quantities of iron, which was taken by ships to different destinations, and the mentioned monuments are witnesses of that period.
In addition, the caves found at the village also attract many visitors that want to see the stalactites and stalagmites with their rare shapes. According to many sources, the place used to be a worship site in ancient times.
Another possible destination that can be reached after Koutalas beach is the bay of Kalo Ambeli, which has another pebbled and sandy beach, and offers panoramic views of the island. However, remember that Kalo Ambeli beach can only be reached on foot.
The easy access to all these sites is a suitable advantage for tourists who do not count on their own means of transportation. The fact of not being isolated, in spite of being a quiet place is also an appealing feature that deserves to be taken into account when visiting Serifos. The possibility to explore the caves along with the interesting religious and historical sites to visit makes Koutalas Beach an interesting option for different kinds of tourists.
