Gria Castle of Koutalas on Serifos: The “Kastro tis Grias” is situated in the village of Koutalas. The “Kastro tis Grias” -meaning “Castle of the old woman”- is constructed on a hill overlooking the bay of Koutalas. It has not been inhabited for some time.
Therefore, it has several ruined houses, traces of an ancient defence wall, as well as some architectural remains from an early Christian basilica, on the chapel of Agia Irini.
In spite of being in this state at present, the Kastro tis Grias area used to be an important point in terms of economy, for Serifos. Ships took large quantities of iron from the harbour of Megalo Livadi to various destinations.
