Serifos Architecture: About the architecture of Serifos Greece, Cyclades

Cyclades are a group of islands located in the middle of the Aegean Sea. From the point of view of administration and government they are a prefecture belonging to Meridian Aegean.

This group comprehends about two hundred and twenty islands, being the main ones – sorted from the biggest in extension - Naxos, Andros, Paros, Tinos, Milos, Kea, Amorgos, Ios, Kythnos, Mykonos, Syros, Santorini, Serifos, Sifnos, Síkinos and Anafi.

To complete the scene, Serifos streets are still stone-paved like in the old times.

Although this architectural style is widely spread on all the Cyclades
As the island used to be the destination of political exiles, both during the Roman and the Byzantine domination, it didn’t really grow or develop as much as some other more popular islands in the area. That is another reason why there are no relevant architectural monuments belonging to the cultures of those periods.

This is quite different from what happened during the Venetian domination, which brought a broad economic and cultural development to the island, which

Although Serifos can be mentioned among the biggest islands of the group, it is in fact a small island, as it only has an area of 75 square kilometers.

Chora Town

The fact of being a small non-crowded island has, to a certain extent, shaped the architecture of the island, as its 1,400 inhabitants have been able to keep the pure typical Cycladic style in the best way - Serifos has hilly grounds and small fertile valleys with particular white-washed houses.

Their windows and doors are painted in lively colours, with a predominance of blue and, no matter the tourist’s place of origin or culture, this architecture style always exerts a great attraction.
islands, Serifos’ inhabitants deserve the merit of having kept it unspoilt, in contrast to the one of some other neighbouring islands – such as Syros – where their Cycladic architecture style mixes up with the own characteristics and features of the place.

If we are to include monuments among the architecture manifestations of Serifos, as in most locations in Greece, there are some monuments from the Hellenistic, the Roman and the Byzantine periods.

Belonging to the Hellenistic age visitors can admire the semi-circular base, a small cistern, an oil press, and the remaining walls of the “Kastro tis Grias”. Unfortunately, most architectural monuments dating from the Roman Empire – whose domination on the island started in 146 BC – were lost due to the repeated pirate invasions and attacks and the eventual Byzantine invasion.
was eventually spoiled by the subsequent Turkish domination and the fierce pirate attacks that prevented Serifos from any economic activity and brought about a great recession.

The Town Hall

However, in recent times, the local inhabitants’ efforts to preserve their town were successful, making Serifos a unique place to go for a walk along the stone-paved narrow streets, enjoy on the superb beaches, and get to know the locals. No doubt Serifos is the ideal place to relax, have fun, and experience memorable moments far from the hectic western business lifestyle.
