 The Church of Panagia Akathi in Schinoussa Cyclades, Greece: Located in Chora, the capital of Schinoussa, the church of Panagia Akathi is the protector of the island. Built in traditional Cycladic style with white walls and blue dome, this church stands in the centre of the villages and hosts a valuable icon of the Virgin Mary (Panagia), from where it took its name.
The church of Panagia Akathi celebrates every year, on August 15th and pilgrims from close islands also gather there. As the protector saint, many women in Schinoussa have taken their name from this church and they are called "Akathi". |
