Akrotiri Santorini: Akrotiri village in the island of Santorini, Greece, Cyclades

Everything has been extremely well preserved because of the volcanic soil of the area.

The city found in Akrotiri must have been destroyed by the terrible eruption of Santorini’s volcano around 1500 BC.

The beautiful frescoes of Akrotiri, Santorini, can only be seen in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

Akrotiri has several other centres of interest. There are many hotels and also many taverns located in the area. Some of them are built in the traditional way, inside an alcove.

Our Impressions:

A nice village which has not been spoiled by a large influx of tourists.
It is likely that you will visit the archeological site just down the road during your visit to Santorini and the village is worth stopping off at as well. There are some splendid houses dotted around as well as the occasional windmill. From here, as with so much of the island, the views are tremendous. You can observe the volcano as well as Fira in the distance. A large church at the centre has quite a few shops and food outlets nearby to cater for the many tourists.

From the small port of Akrotiri, a small boat can take you to the famous Red Village and the White beach but also can take you for a tour to the volcano's islands, Nea kai Palia Kameni.
