The main port of Santorini is known as Athinios or the New Port. It is situated in the southwestern part of the island, at the foot of the caldera, and it faces the volcanic islet Nea Kameni.
Passenger ferries to Santorini only arrive at Athinios Port and connect Santorini to other Cycladic islands and beyond.

The location of the port of Santorini offers quite an impressive sight and, as you approach the port from the seaside, you will notice that it is enclosed by massive rocks, with numerous whitewashed houses built above the cliffs.
The port is, in fact, considered one of the world’s most impressive ports!

The distance from Fira (the capital) is about 8 km, while the Airport lies approximately 9.3 km away.

Direct connections by ferry are available with the following destinations:
Piraeus (Athens) | Mykonos | Paros | Naxos | Amorgos | Syros | Ios | Folegandros | Milos | Heraklion (Crete) | Anafi and more.

Public transfers

KTEL buses are the cheapest way to get out of the port (prices: 1.60-2.20€, discounts may apply for people having many children or any disability and students). Buses are considered a reliable means of transport and offer sufficient luggage storage space under the bus, as well as comfortable seats. You purchase your ticket directly from the driver and can only pay in cash.
The bus stop is located at the port and the routes are regular. The buses departing from the port transfer passengers to the Central Bus Station in Fira, which lies 8.6 km away.
The trip from the port to Fira takes 20 minutes and costs €2.00.

From Fira, you will have to take another bus (Fira-Oia route) to get to the terminal station of Oia, which lies 12 km away from Fira. It will take you 20 minutes to get from the port to Fira and 30 more minutes to get to Oia from Fira (for €1.60). That is the most popular route, so it may be challenging to secure a seat on the bus. It is also a long ride and, since it involves a bus switch, it is not recommended, especially if you are carrying heavy luggage.

In Fira, you will also find bus routes that can take you to other parts of the island, including but not limited to Imerovigli (in 30 minutes for €1.60), Kamari (also in 30 minutes for €1.60) and Perissa (in 20 minutes, for €2.20).

In addition, you will be able to get from the port to the airport with a bus switch at Fira. Bus tickets from Fira to the airport cost €1.60, and the trip only takes 10 minutes. There is approximately one bus route per hour.

Car rentals

It is possible to rent a car and pick it up directly at the port as soon as you arrive. The greatest advantage of car rentals is that you are free to go wherever you wish and explore the best places of interest in Santorini, including the secluded landmarks of Santorini, towns & villages and beaches that cannot be reached by bus. Taxis & Private transfers

The easiest way to get away from the port is by booking your private transfer online ahead of time. The available options include a taxi, minibus, or private VIP car, and the pickup can take place directly at the port. Alternatively, you can call the local drivers and arrange a pickup by dialing one of the following numbers: 0030 690 679 4316, 0030 22860 22555.

A limited number of taxis are available on the island and finding one on-site can be quite challenging. They only accept cash and can take up to 4 passengers per vehicle.
Some locations you can reach from the port by taxi are Fira (20 minutes), Oia (60 minutes), Imerovigli (25 minutes), Kamari (30 minutes), and the airport (25 minutes).
We recommend not relying on finding a taxi at the port. Unless you do not mind waiting a long time, a pre-booked private transfer is a much better option.

Hotel transfers

Many hotels & guesthouses may offer private port or airport transfers for free or at an extra charge, among other services.

Port Facilities

At the port of Athinios, you will find an air-conditioned waiting room with free WiFi access and free car parking areas. ATM machines, shops, restaurants, cafes, and accommodation options are available nearby, too. The port is open 24/7.

Important notes

During the high season (June to early September), the port can get overcrowded, and occasional ferry delays may be inevitable. Traffic congestion in the port area may also increase, so it is highly advised to allow some flexibility and arrange your plans accordingly.

Other ports in Santorini

In addition to Athinios, there are a few other ports in Santorini that do not serve large ferries:
Ammoudi Port: Ammoudi is a small harbor below Oia, enclosed by volcanic rocks. It is only used by fishing boats, tour boats, and some small ferries to Thirassia island. It comprises a picturesque setting and can be reached via road or on foot, by climbing down approximately 300 steps.
Gialos Port: Also known as the Old Port of Fira, Gialos Port is situated below the settlement of Fira. Although it is no longer used by ferries or other large vessels, it currently serves cruise ships, excursion boats to the volcano, and fishing boats. You can get there on foot (~600 steps down) or by cable car.
