Santorini Sightseeing: The Santorini Folklore Museum |
This museum is away from the centre of Fira and somewhat removed from the other batch of museums. It is actually a real gem and worth making the walk or short drive. For 3 euros you receive a guided tour of the museum. It is in effect a small village within a small area and you walk between the various shops and houses. The workshops here include a carpenter and shoemakers which contain the original tools. There is a house here which is a good example of the way they are caved into the cliff on the island. It highlights the ingenious way more rooms can be dug out as the more children are born. The winery is also of great interest. Perhaps the highlight of this museum is the small mine. As you enter here you walk down into the rock and it is a superb way of seeing the different layers upon which the town above sits. The museum area also contains the Chapel of St Konstatingi which provides a good way of acquainting yourself with the churches on the island. The tour finishes in the art gallery displaying various depictions of Santorini. |
