We had been planning (and saving!!) for a trip to Santorini for the last two years, and we finally made it during the end of September last year. Thankfully there was none of the swarms of tourists occupying every single sun lounger on the beaches, or taking up every parapet wall of the cafes and restaurants that cling to the rim of the caldera and offer magnificent views of the sunset and the deep blue waters of the Aegean.
One of our first views of
Santorini, as we entered the port of Fira is indescribable! Suspended above the cliffs, we had the good fortune to witness one of the most spectacular views of the giant lagoon left by a volcanic eruption. We stayed in Kamari, a family resort with loads of taverns and bars. We didn't like the pebbled beach much and the black rocks were very hot, they seemed to gather all the sunrays.
The next day, we headed for the beach of Perissa. Now, that is a nice beach, a perfect place for back packers and campers, and the beach is large, which means you don't have to go sidestepping bodies in your search for space. Although beaches were fine, you can't describe Santorini without mentioning the amazing views from Fira, the wonderful sunset of Oia and the nice churches almost in every corner. It is nice that people in Greece are so religious. I believe this has contributed a lot to their kind nature.
