The Greek Islands have always been known for its fascinating natural beauty. While we were planning our trip to Santorini, I saw a lot of photographs and read a lot of reviews about this island, but what I saw there really hit me. Reaching the island by ferry was the first impressing view: the trip takes long from Athens (5 to 6 hours) and there was a bit delay on the trip, but the view of the huge rock with the white houses on top of it is something people shouldn’t lose! I suggest you go by ferry and leave by plane. That is what we did. We were lucky to find a direct charter to London. Easy Jet has flights three times a week.
I can’t find the right words to describe Santorini!! Only impressive and magical come to my mind, but this is too little to give you an understanding of what we saw! This was out third time to the Greek islands. We hadn’t visited Santorini because we thought that we wouldn’t like it with so much tourism. But actually, things are kept fine there, there are a lot of people but they don’t make noise or you don’t hear the loud music of the clubs. The atmosphere is more romantic and quiet, perfect for a family or a couple.
Our best thing was to sit for a coffee at the coffee houses in Fira and see the volcano. It is actually a rock in the middle of the caldera. There are tour boats going there if you want to actually feel the volcano. The soil is hot and the craters are steaming. It is not much of an experience but you will probably not have the chance to walk on a volcano again, so from this point I guess it is worth it!
The sunset in Oia was also great and romantic, but didn't seem so special to us, just like the sunsets in Amorgos or Naxos. We preferred more Fira, it was busier but the restaurants and coffee houses would give you better views. Our favourite restaurant was Fanari in Fira, take a table next to caldera to see the night lights of Santorini. You will also like the wines. Try the wines of Santorini, ask the waiter to suggest you a local wine. Be careful because some wines can be strong.
The beaches on Santorini are not great, except for Kamari and Perivolos. The rest were very rocky and it is a pity that people don’t clean them. Especially the famous Red beach was very rocky for and difficult to go. I missed some sandy beaches on Santorini, but this is not the reason not to go there. After all, there are so many Greek islands with sandy beaches, but there is only ONE Santorini!!
