The trip: We arrived in Athens Greece by plane and then took the ferry to Santorini Island. We had to wait 6 hours to take the ferry! And then we had a 10 hours trip in front of us! So long... I really regret to have choosen the cheapest way. Fortunately I had a 3 weeks trip in front of me. If I had only one week of holidays it would had drive me crazy.
Reasons for going to Santorini: I had a report from friends saying that it was the most beautiful of the Greek Islands. The Greek Islands are supposed to be extremely beautiful, so why not going to the most beautiful of them. They told me that it was something unique. I saw the island on "Love Boat" when I was young and was always attracted by it. I was only hopping that the island would look the same. I also checked many pictures and reviews about Santorini. All were saying that it is extremely beautiful but the beaches were not so good. As after Santorini I was going on Mykonos, I didn't care much about the beaches.
Idea before arriving: That it would be like the pictures of the Greek Island one can see on tv, in the magazines and travel brochures. I was waiting for dramatic sceneries, little villages, and good greek food.
Expectations and opinions: YES, YES, YES... it certainly met my expectations and more... the first approach really impressed me... it was like 7 in the morning when the boat approached the island. The view was extraordinary. I was feeling like in the middle of a place created by god. You could see the villages on the top of the impressive cliffs. You could see the crazy and beautiful architecture and even the blue domed churches. It was like geting in an ancient civilization. There, everything was fine. We weren't staying in those famous and amazing hotels with view over the volcano but it was fine and confortable. The island was like I wanted to be. The villages are really amazing and more especialy the village of Oia. Incredible sunsets from there. The food and more especialy the sea food was also great. There is a couple of taverns in the tiny port of Oia that really worth the ride down.
Favorite thing about Santorini: I really enjoyed the amazing views. One day, the atmosphere was so clear that you could sea mountains from Crete. I checked Crete and a map and couldn't beleive my eyes. I also enjoyed the excursions we made to the different places, villages and beaches. The beaches are fine for a refreshment. Of course there are not like those of Mykonos but they are fine. And many nice beach bars. There are also many interesting musueums. Unfortunately the site of Akrotiri was closed when I was there.
Negative opinion: Nothing negative about this island. Maybe that some people and staff in restaurants and cafes were sometimes rude. But I heard that it was normal in Greece and nothing to take personaly :)
Recommendations: Just go there and try also to make an island hopping to Mykonos and Naxos. Santorini is the diva, Mykonos the cosmopolitan, the party animal and expensive, and Naxos is the ralaxed and root.
Yes, I think I will return to those islands in few years. But need to save some money ('cause Mykonos never gives you a break)
