Santorini Reviews -General

We found the flight times from Athens to Santorini inconvenient. There were early morning and late night flights to and from the island from Athens. As we came from London, we had long transit times in Athens airport. It would be much better to have good air routes with minimum transit times in Athens to maximise the time spent on the island. When we arrived from London to Athens, we had a choice of 4 hour transit from 1am to 5 am or from 6 pm to 10 pm in Athens airport. It meant we spent a whole day travelling to Santorini and another day back to London. We arrived in Santorini nearly midnight because our Athens to Thira flight was delayed by 1hour 40mins (Olympic Airways). I would have preferred a quicker way there from London and spent more time on the island! Maybe easier connections from the mainland on ferries would also help bring more tourists there.

Apart from this inconveniece, the rest was great. The island was amazing. although too crowded. Beaches especially were far too crowded and not the best I have seen in Greece. The only beach worth to go is the Red beach, which consists of volcano pebbles. We loved the scenery and the view was wonderful from where we stayed in Fira. Food was also good, we had good restaurant recommendations from the place we stayed. Unfortunately the archealogical site of Akrotiri was closed. Also we had not realised that Ancient Thera was closed at 2.30 pm so when we got there at 3 pm after lunch. We could not see it and we had to leave the next morning. Is it possible to keep the site open for a longer time?
