Santorini Red Beach

General information

The Red Beach in Santorini is arguably the most famous and beautiful beach in Santorini.
It is also considered one of the most spectacular beaches in Greece.
It is located in the area of Akrotiri and is only some steps away from the ancient site of Akrotiri.
On some days, most visitors choose not to walk all the way down to the beach and instead admire the unique landscape of red and black volcanic rocks from the headland.

Accessing the beach is relatively easy.
You can leave your car at the parking space and continue on foot, which takes about two minutes.
As you gradually get down following the path, you will be impressed by the different colorings of the cliffs.
Numerous sunbeds and umbrellas cover the dark sand.
Snorkeling is highly recommended due to the interesting underwater rock formations.
You can also approach the beach by boats that depart from Akrotiri port.

    No thanks

The effort you need in order to reach this beach is not worth it. You need to climb the cliff and it is not recommended with sea shoes, but while you're going to such a place, you usually don't dress something differently. When you are there you'll find stones and entering the water is not easy in many points.

    Very dirty

Red beach was very dirty. There was no rubbish bins and nothing there to sit on like most of the other places. I did not mind the walk down but was disappointed when I got there. I only stayed a short time and went to a cleaner place. Very disappointing as I had been told so much about how beautiful it was, but found that it had not been cleaned up for a very long time or more to the point most people left their crap behind instead of taking it with them and disposing of it in the bins up the hill.

Difficult terrain and hot sand but beautiful

This is definitely a beach to come see - but be prepared. Access to it is via a fairly rough, steep trail with precipitous drop-offs. Plan on wearing tennis shoes, not flip-flops or sandals for the climb. Alternatively, you can take a water taxi from just below where the bus drops you off. The taxi drops you off in calf-high water, so plan accordingly with water shoes or dive boots. Water shoes or dive boots are a must for walking on the sand and/or into the water. The "sand" is very hot and full of uncomfortably large rocks. Likewise, wading into the water is difficult for the rocky shore. The landscape is magnificent - the red rocks overlooking the dark beach is very impressive. And so were the crowds when we visited in early July 2008! Female toplessness is not unusual. There are NO facilities and not much nearby - there are a few stands near the car park for water, food, etc. - make sure you bring whatever you expect to need.
