Over 100,000 patients seek medical help on one of Greece’s most popular tourist islands, the island of Santorini. In an effort to meet this growing demand a hospital shall be constructed on the island, confirmed Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos yesterday.

Avramopoulos said that initially a medical clinic will be built in Imerovigli that will subsequently be converted into a hospital over the period of the following two years. “In two years at the most, Santorini will acquire one of the most modern hospitals in the region,” the minister proudly stated.

Local official’s reports state that in 2006 approximately 92,000 people sought medical attention, with the maximum number of cases originating in the busy summer months.

This year Santorini is expected to host an estimated 1 million people.
