The famous cherry tomato of Santorini was nominated product of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) by the European Commission under the term Tomataki Santorinis. This small tomato is said to be first cultivated on the island in 1875. The Greek sailors brought from Suez this strange tomato variety that could survive in dry climate and needed very few water.

This tomato variety became very popular in the islands of Cyclades where the soil is very dry and the rainfalls are few. The tomatos that come from these plants are very small, in the size of a cherry. This is why they are called cherry tomatoes. Due to the volcanic soil of Santorini and the lack of water, the cherry tomato has a very concentrated flavor compared to other tomatoes.
