The 7th Thessaloniki International wine competition, held in Thessaloniki from the 5th of March till the 7th of March, 2007 saw many Santorini wines come in to the limelight, winning significant honors. With over 683 samples participating from not just Greece but also from Mexico, Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Cyprus, Portugal, Austria and Spain, the winnings by Santorini wines were indeed special. Organized by The Wine Producers Association of the Northern Greece Vineyard and HELEXPO, organizers of the wine exhibition Oenos, the event is the only international wine competition held in all of Greece.
Held annually, the 7th Thessaloniki International Wine festival marked Santorini as a major player in the wine arena. With their Vinsanto, aged 4 years, a 1999 vintage from Santo wines, winning the Grand Gold, Santorini wines had a great start.

Held in accordance to the specifications of the International Organization of Vine and Wine and the legislation of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, the wine competition is judged by experts which include internationally acclaimed wine tasters, oenologists, wine experts, journalists who have been acclaimed for their writing on wine and other experts from Greece as well as abroad. Results were declared after three days of sample wine tasting by the experts, with Santorini wines emerging as strong contenders. In all Greece won 170 medals, which included three Grand Gold medals, one of them from Santorini.
