Chief wine critic of The Times, Eric Asimov, showcased a Santorini wine, the 2006 Thalassitis, from Gaia Estate, at a recently held New York Times Travel Show.

Held at Javits center, the event was aimed at bringing out the best wines from unexpected places. Attended by numerous travel journalists and travelers as well as wine connoisseurs, from all over the world, the event hosted many visitors. Booths were set up by various countries to promote their wine, and the entire area was swarming with creativity of different cultures coming together.

With the aim of trying to find wines from unexpected areas, the event hoped to bring them enough exposure to compete with their more famous counterparts, which due to their popularity have become an expensive buy. Out of the three wines picked, the first was from the volcanic island of Santorini. Rustic by no means, even though poured into plastic cups the wine reportedly won many hearts.
