:: The Volcano

In Ancient Times, the Santorini Greece name was "strongili" which means "circular" in Greek. Around 1500 B.C., the island was the victim of a huge volcanic eruption followed by many earthquakes.The Eruption was so strong that the centre of Santorini sank into the deep waters and created a landscape that can still be seen today.
The volcano's islet is situated in a huge basin of water and is surrounded by the impressive cliffs of the land.
The traditional villages of the island are perched on the edge of these cliffs.
The specialists believe that the eruption of the volcano could be responsible for the extension of the Minoan Civilization.
