Paros Impressions, Greece: General impression of Paros, Cyclades

 

 
General:
Paros is, for the Cyclades, quite a large island. It contains a wealth of beaches, a number of interesting historical sites and is not without its fair share of good bars and restaurants. The island’s main port and biggest town is Parikia on the west coast.
 

Other notable towns which are well worth a visit are Naoussa and Lefkes.
And there are numerous villages, often quite small, with beautiful churches and alleys to explore. Many of the island’s top beaches are on the west coast.
 

Here at places like Golden Beach (Chrisi Akti) the windsurfing is world renowned. The island was once highly prosperous because of its marble and you can still visit the quarries.
 
Our Impressions:
The island is very picturesque, dotted with hills, typically Cycladic churches and long rolling bays.
It is largely unspoiled although the wealth of hotels near some beaches is a bit disappointing.
 

Aside from this some of the smaller villages seem stuck in a past life and are fascinating to see. It is well worth having your own form of transport to explore delights like this as well as isolated beaches.
 

The capital Parikia may have a hectic waterfront but away from this it is worth spending some time in the museum and of course the famous Panagia Ekatontapyliani church.

Practical advices:

 Arriving at the port:
- Try to get a seat as soon as you get on the boat and make sure you don’t lose it. Be prepared for the mayhem as you get off the boat in Paros . You will be bombarded with people trying to offer accommodation etc.

Arriving at the airport:
- The airport is located 10 km from the main town of Parikia.
- Many taxis are available. Car rental are available there.
- A bus links the airport to the main villages of Parikia and Naoussa.

General
Paros is one of the central islands of the Cyclades and can get very crowded.

Villages
 The main village is Parikia and the most cosmopolitan is Naoussa. Other villages are available and are known for there authencity (Lefkes, Marpissa,...)

The Roads
The roads are in good conditions but be aware of scooters and other motorbikes. There are many accidents of tourists with scooters. And the local people are driving like crazy.
