Ferry Athens Paros

From Athens

• How long is the duration of the trip?
The duration varies from a minimum of 2h50m to a maximum of 6h20m, whereas the average time is around 4 hours. That depends on the type of vessel (conventional or high-speed), the port of departure (Piraeus or Rafina), the in-between stops to other islands, and, on some rare occasions, the weather/wind conditions.

• How much do the tickets cost?
Prices depend on the vessel (conventional or high-speed) and the port of departure (Piraeus or Rafina). Some indicative prices are:

  • €40.5 for the conventional Blue Star from Piraeus with a trip duration of around 4 hours.
  • €70.9 for the high-speed ferry with Seajets from Piraeus with the trip lasting 2 hours and 50 minutes.
  • €68 or the high-speed Golden Star from Rafina with the trip lasting around 4 hours.

• What ferries are operating from Athens to Paros?
There are two types of vessels operating this route: the conventional ones run by the Blue Star company and high-speed ones run by Seajets, Minoan Lines, Golden Star, and Fast Ferries companies.

> Conventional ferries
The conventional type of ferry is a big vessel with several indoor and outdoor spaces and a garage. If you are traveling with a dog, an organized kennel is available. However, depending on the vessel, you may be able to keep your dog with you on the deck. Restaurants, fast food eateries, cafeterias, small shops with magazines, and more run on the ship. All interior spaces are air-conditioned. Crossing with a conventional Blue Star Ferry is the most popular option. Challenging weather conditions like strong winds, do not affect those vessels much, and, in most cases, they arrive and depart on time. Additionally, the trip is much more pleasant because of their size and areas, since you can enjoy the beautiful sea views while having lunch or a coffee. Last but not least, another advantage of this ferry type is that for an extra fee, you can take your car with you to Paros.
Types of seats: Deck/Economy, Airline seat/Economy, Airline seat/Business, Cabins with/without a porthole.
Price range: €40.5 - €71
Vehicle: €32 - €60 (Moto), €116 (Car)
Timetable: During the summer season, there are at least 2 itineraries per day for this type of vessel from Piraeus to Paros and vice versa.

> High-speed ferries
The high-speed ferries are smaller and reach higher velocities. Passengers sit in the air-conditioned indoor area since no outdoor spaces are available. Seats are exclusively numbered airline-type seats. You can buy coffee, refreshments, or snacks from the coffee shop that lies within the ferry. Most vessels have a garage and you can transfer your car or motorbike from Athens to Paros. The big advantage of choosing high-speed ferries is that they go faster and the price is similar to the conventional ferries'. On the other hand, because of the vessels' small size, bad weather conditions affect them and it has been noticed that delays may occur.
Types of seats: Airline seat/Economy, Airline seat/Business, Airline seat/VIP.
Price range: €59 - €70.9
Vehicle: €34.5 - €45 (moto) - €115.9 - €144.7 (Car)
Timetable: During the summer season, there are 4 itineraries per day for this type of vessel from Rafina to Paros and vice versa.

ISLAND HOPPING OPTIONS

Paros is a crossroad for many ferry routes and an ideal destination for island hopping due to its location at the center of the Cyclades. Apart from the most popular island-hopping destinations that can be combined with Paros, some low-profile Greek islands that can be easily reached from its port are:
Amorgos: The island of the Big Blue is 2.5 - 3.5 hours away from Paros and ferries connect the two islands on a daily basis. The two most popular companies operating this route are Blue Star and Seajets. A one-way ticket costs €48 - €52.70.
Syros: Syros and its captivating town, Ermoupoli, is the Capital of the Cyclades. This charming island has maintained its beautiful neoclassical architecture and is a year-round destination. Fast Ferries' and Minoan Lines' high-speed vessels connect the two islands. The trip duration is less than 2 hours and the ticket costs €39 - €52 depending on the ferry company.
Folegandros: Last but not least an upcoming destination and a great island-hopping option from Paros is Folegandros. Folegandros is characterized by its relaxing ambiance and exuberant inhabitants. It lies 6h10m away from Paros and the ticket costs €82.70. A Seajets high-speed vessel operates this route once a day during the high season.

WHERE TO GO FOR A DAY TRIP

The perfect day trip from Paros is to Antiparos Island. Antiparos is located just one mile away from Paros. Its size is very small, making it ideal for a day excursion. Due to their proximity, only small boats operate the crossing almost one time per hour. The boats for Antiparos depart from the ports of Parikia and Pounda. The trip from Pounda lasts 7 minutes and the ticket costs €1.50. On the other hand, the trip from Parikia lasts 30 minutes, and the ticket costs €5. Ferries from/to Pounda are available throughout the year, yet itineraries from/to Parikia are only available during summer.
Note: All tickets from/to Antiparos are purchased locally, therefore booking a ticket online is not possible.
Naxos is only a short ferry route away from Paros. It is not considered the ideal day trip since the island is very big with many things to see and do so you shall need more than one day to discover it. Nonetheless, if you just want to take a glimpse of life in Naxos or visit a specific beach or its beautiful Chora, then taking a morning ferry from Paros and returning with an evening one is ideal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the port of Paros?
The port where all the ferries arrive and depart in Paros is located in Parikia (Chora), the capital of the island and the center of life. From the Port, you can admire Panagia Ekatontapiliani Monastery, the landmark of Parikia, along with the famous whitewashed Cycladic houses. The port itself is located in a very central part of the town.

How can I get from the port to the beaches?
The Central Bus station (KTEL Buses) of the island is located at the port's entrance. It is the starting and ending point of all bus schedules to the most famous beaches and some villages on the island. Right next to the buses, you will find a taxi rank, too. Note that due to the limited number of taxis on the island, it is hard to find a free cab on the port when the ferry arrives or departs. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to book your transfer in advance.

How can I get from the airport to the port?
The airport is located 10km south of the Port of Paros. There is a taxi rank with a few taxis waiting during the day, but it is more reliable to book your transfer in advance. Moreover, there is a bus stop at the airport and buses can take you to the Port/Town, other villages or the beaches.

What is better? Flying or taking the ferry to Paros?
Although Paros has an airport and flying there is a timesaver, the most common way to travel to the island is by ferry. Due to the limited flights and the high demand, airplane tickets are pricey. Taking the ferry is recommended. Tickets are fixed-priced and available online. Lastly, the whole experience of traveling by ferry across the Aegean Sea is spellbinding and the best start for your summer holidays!
