marbles that have been excavated since the ancient times. In fact, it was from the marbles of Paros that many ancient temples and statues were constructed. Today, these mines do not work but they can be seen abandoned in the centre of the island, close to Marathi.
History says that this island has been inhabited since 3,000 BC, the Early Cycladic period. Due to its strategic position in the Aegean Sea, it was conquered many times first by the Minoans, then by the Athenians in the Classical Period (5th century BC) and gradually it followed the historic course of the rest of Greece. However, many archaeological sites have been unearthed to remind the long history of Paros island, such as the Asklepieion, an ancient healing centre on a hill above Parikia, the capital of the island.
Parikia is the capital and main port of the island. Located on the western side, it has small white houses, narrow streets and picturesque windmills. In the evenings, Parikia has a vivid nightlife with clubs and bars that stay open till the early hours. The closest beaches are Krios and Krotiri, with clean water and lots of accommodation. Parikia is usually crowded all day because it serves as the transportation hub of the island.
The second most important village of Paros island is Naoussa, a lovely place on the northern side. Famous for its beautiful fishing port, the traditional architecture and the cosmopolitan nightlife, Naoussa is close to some of the most beautiful beaches on Paros, including Kolimbithres, Santa Maria and Monastiri.
Another popular spot of Paros island is the south eastern side, with amazing beaches, relaxing resorts and delicious fish taverns. Piso Livadi, Drios and Golden Beach are the most famous resorts. In fact, Golden Beach is also famous for its windsurfing conditions, the best in Cyclades, and international windsurfing and kite surfing championships are organized there every summer.
However, apart from crowded spots, Paros island also has many quiet coves and relaxing villages, if you are looking more for calmness rather than noise. Not to be missed are also the traditional villages in the inland, including Lefkes, Prodromos and Marpissa, with small white houses and amazing natural surroundings. |
