The Rakee Distillation Festival in Naxos: One of the most noteworthy events that take place in Naxos island is the Rakee Distillation Festival that is celebrated annually in the month of September in the Municipality of Drymalia. It is also known as the Rakitzo festival. It is a festival that involves a great feast for the people of Naxos, as soon as the distillate is collected.
Till the mid of September the grape harvesting process is continued. Just at the later period of this month, this harvesting process terminates and all the villagers gather to take part in the Rakee Production. The distillation process is then continued and accompanied by feasts for the people from all the villages of Naxos. Once the first distillate is gathered, people also take part in drinking of spree that is also regarded as a custom in the Rakitzo festival. |
