Naxos Kouros Statues: The Kouros Statues in Naxos Greece, Cyclades

Naxos Kouros Statues
Kouros Statue in Melanes NaxosThe Statues of Kouros in Naxos Greece: These remarkable statues can be seen at the villages of Melanes and Apollonas, on Naxos. They are conspicuous by their larger than normal features and they are actualy incomplete statues of young men. Historians believe that these statues were predestined to hold on to a temple roof but they were decidedly abandoned by the ancient sculptors due to faults in the marble and stone that were constructed of.

Their construction is simple and plain, without any decorative features. It is believed that they used to depict local heroes, or even the god Dionysus, who inhabited on the island, according to mythology.

Kouros Statue in Apollonas NaxosThese are two such statues today on the island of Naxos: one outside Melanes village, in the centre of Naxos, and another outside Apollonas village, on the northeastern. The statues, which date from the 8th and the 6th centuries BC, have not been moved from the location they were found, the location where they lay for hundreds of years now. Remains of ancient temples surround both statues.
