Location: Melanes

One of the most impressive archaeological findings in Naxos is the ancient aqueduct, parts of which can be spotted in various locations on the island.
The tunnel is around 220m long, with its height ranging between 1.40m and 1.60m in different sections.

Relevant research shed light on the origins of the constructions and placed the aqueduct’s creation in the Archaic period, during the reign of the tyrant Lygdamis.
At that time, lack of water was a major issue for the residents of Chora, so the Naxians started to build water pipes, starting from Flerio, near the village of Melanes.
The constructions continued during the Roman period and more elevated techniques were used, showcasing the virtuosity of the workers, especially considering that parts of the pipes were in a tunnel that had to be dug to connect mountainous regions.

Nowadays, parts of the ancient aqueduct have been preserved and restored and can be visited in various locations in Naxos - namely Barou, Kaminis, Katsopirno, Leftera, Emazos, Perdikia, Faragas, Agios Thaleleos, Agios Isidoros, Agios Stefanos, Trani Fountana, and Kastro. Barou is the entry point of the tunnel, while Kaminia is the exit point. In Flerio lies an info center where you can learn more about the aqueduct's history.
