Mykonos Impressions, Greece: General impression of Mykonos, Cyclades

General:
Mykonos is one of the Cyclades, a smallish island within a few hours boat travel of Piraeus.

Busy in high season it provides an interesting mix of beaches, expensive clothes shops and party style nightlife with a site of immense historical and architectural importance in the nearby island of Delos.

The towns and villages are of the traditional Cycladic style and with a population of under 10,000 much of the island is unspoiled and rugged. The main port and town, Mykonos, is situated on the west coast and the only inland settlement of any significance is the village of Ano Mera.

Because of its size the island is quite easy to navigate and it’s no

problem to visit all the best beaches and sights within a week’s stay. Restaurants on the island provide a mix of traditional Greek food with seafood specialties.

Our Impressions:
Mykonos may not be to everyone’s taste because of the high level of tourists and the cost of holidaying here but its intriguing Hora and fantastic beaches mean that it demands a visit.

The beaches along the south coast are great sun traps and remarkably picturesque.

You can also partake in a number of sea bound activities such as diving.
A visit to Delos is rewarding and depending on your idea of a good night out there are a number of options.
Paradise Beach is a good place for the young who want to drink and dance all night while a number of good restaurants and quietish bars in the hora are better suited to others.

The roads may not all be in top class condition and signs to the beaches etc could be better but it doesn’t take long to work out how to get about the island.

Don’t underestimate the meltemi wind which can make getting to the beach a bit of struggle through a sandstorm but once on the beach itself, well positioned barriers protect you from the blast.

Practical advices:

Arriving at the port:
- If you arrive at the New Port and are on foot be aware that it is a good 2km to the main town. It could be a problem if you are carrying heavy bags but there are taxis.
If you arrive at the Town Port the Pier One facility is straight in front of you and can offer car hire etc as well as luggage storage. There is also one by the ferry quay. Eurobank, next to the town quay offers money exchange and is a convenient place to go on arrival.

Arriving at the airport:
- The airport is located 4 km from the main town.
- Many taxis are available. Car rental are available there

General
Be prepared for an expensive visit. Mykonos is the most trendy and cosmopolitan island and everything is more expensive than other islands.

Villages

There is only one main village on Mykonos. All the activities are gathered there.

The Roads
The roads are in good conditions but be aware of scooters and other motorbikes. There are many accidents of tourists with scooters.
And the local people are driving like crazy.
