Mykonos is a very beautful island. I have been for 28yrs and have seen many changes, but still lovely best beaches in Greece. The Greeks call Mykonos the island of love and happiness, and that's what it is, a very happy place. Don't go in August though as it is too crowded and you can't really enjoy what Mykonos has to offer you. Winter can be nice also, if you like quietness.
Mykonos has the best beaches in Greece, a completey different life style and people on every beach, with wonderfull reasturants. Little Venice area with beautifull windmills great for watching a beautifull sunset.
Nightlife is good, lovely to sit at the lovely port of Mykonos and can also enjoy a lovely breakfast there, while the fishermen return and the lovely island pelicans go to get their fish for breakfast.
Not a great deal of historical monuments on Mykonos, but a short and spectacular boad ride away, you will visit the small unihabited island of Delos, with more history than you can handle. Read up a bit on it first so as you can get the most out of your trip, daily trips around 10.00 am returning about 1.00 pm. Wear a hat as it gets real hot. Greeks love to sing and dance so get in shape and join in.
Try to visit the other side of the island where you will find the real beauty and beaches, not full of sunbeds. Organised island safaris are also an option for you and great if your travelling alone, lunch included. Also organised boat beach trips available, well I could go on forever, just go and enjoy.
Have you seen the lovely film Shirley Valentine? it was filmed in Mykonos mostly at the beautifull beach of AiYanis, with many local folk taking part.
Mykonos has some of the finest reasturants in Greece, many being at the beaches. Some of the bars give bad booze so whatch out, go to reputable places. This happens all over Greece, stick to bottle water, no tap water and make sure you don't get rusty ice cubes.
Mykonos is expensive so be prepared, but it is well worth it. Either stay in town or at a beach, there are many hotels, which are neither here nor there and that can spoil your holiday. There are many taxis but come the busy summer season and they can be almost impossible to get. Take care of your valuables at all times. Rent a car rather than a moped to avoid accidents.
