More about: Mykonos island
My last visit to Mykonos was when I was in my teens, and I had with me a gang of buddies for whom the place did not matter as much as the company. My faint recollections of the place include a backpack holiday sleeping at the beachside and imbibing a lot of alcohol with very little memories of the place itself. There were just a few beachside taverns and not many rooms to let on the Paradise Beach. So, armed with just 30$ and a lot of youthful spirit, I could spend a whole week in
Mykonos. But that was way back in the seventies.
Things had certainly changed since then. And so had I. Mykonos had turned into one of the most happening places in Greece with a night life that would rival any of the high-profile metros around the world. And I had become a more discerning traveler. Clubs, bars, discos, and high-class restaurants have changed the face of Mykonos, and prices have skyrocketed. Far from the place of my teenage days, Mykonos today is a rich men paradise, where the best is available, but at a price. The rowdy wild, night life, great beaches, celebrity visitors, and some of the most exotic restaurants in the world, have indeed turned Mykonos into a holiday destination for the "haves".
The only thing that has been unfairly said about Mykonos, in my opinion, is its infamous reputation as a gay resort. It is about as much "gay" as San Francisco, and I found that although, the island has a high degree of tolerance for homosexuality, it does not really matter to those who don't go looking for it.
