I must admit I was a little apprehensive about some anti-publicity the island has received for being a highly expensive holiday destination and a drug/ gay capital. After having spent a week there, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that this beautiful Cycladic Island is anything but what the media sharks make it out to be.
Despite being a budget traveler, I found plenty of accommodation to suit my requirements and I never once had any feeling of any sort of fear or insecurity. Of course, the island has a high influx of gay population, but this is because like in many other parts of the world, there is high degree of social tolerance there.
I traveled mostly on foot in and around
Mykonos, drinking in the picturesque setting of white-washed sugar-like houses set alongside a labyrinth of alleys and narrow streets, sparkling blue waters and sandy stretches, windmills from a bygone era and tiny churches with blue roofs.
And everywhere I went, I was overwhelmed by the warmth of the locals. I took the bus to the beaches and although I was alone, nobody stole my things from the beach. I met beautiful girls to hang out and had delicious souvlaki everywhere. Mykonos is truly a magical island. No wonder that vacationers return year after year.
