Panagia Paraportiani is the most famous and most photographed
church of Mykonos and is a real architectural marvel.
It consists of four tiny whitewashed churches (Agios Sozontas,
Agioi Anargyroi, Agia Anastasia, Agios Efstathios) forming,
with the main church a wonderful asymmetrical glimmering
white church.
The main church is dating from the 15th century and its
name, Paraportiani, comes from the word 'porta' which
means door, for it used to be standing near the entrance
of a medieval castle which has been destroyed.
This convent was founded during Turkish Period (early
17th century) and is dedicated to the Assumption of the
Virgin Mary ('Kimissis tis Theotokou').
Extremely fine and beautiful icons are housed in the Convent
of Panagia, dating from 1738 and made by the famous Cretan
painter, Ioannis Skordilis.

From an architectural point of view,
the monastery is really impressive, with spare, linear
lines, a whitewashed exterior and a coloured dome and,
in its courtyard, a wonderful sculptured marble fountain
and a fine wood-carved temple from Florence can be admired.
The monastery also houses a small religious museum which
exhibits various holy vestments and items, Byzantine icons
and the first bells of the monastery's main church.
