Catacombs reopened to public 2009-09-30 10:56:03 GMT

More than 30,000 people have visited the Catacombs of Milos in the last two months, since they reopened to the public. The Catacombs of Milos had been closed for almost 5 years due to restoration works which ensured that they will be safe for many centuries to come. In fact, due to these works, Milos was recently declared a "holy island", along with Tinos and Patmos, with law of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

These works made sure that there is no danger of collapse and a temporary emergency exit was constructed. Moreover, the internal and external environment was cleaned, secret lighting was put and the floor was covered with a special material. Moreover, the main entrance of the Catacombs was decorated with stone and a new reception hall was made. During these works, some important findings were excavated, such as a big marble sarcophagous, twelve oil lamps, two tombs of adults and other things that haven't been evaluated yet.

The erection of these catacombs has been a huge work, important for tourism in Greece and the image of the country abroad. Note that the Catacombs of Milos, along with the catacombs in Rome and Jerusalem, are the most important of the 74 catacombs that have been found all over the world.
