Milos and Kimolos, a small island on the north eastern side, were a single island many millenniums ago that were divided into two due to an earthquake. It is said that the island was inhabited as early as the 6th millennium BC. Both the Minoans and Mycenaeans used to live here in the 2nd millennium, during which the island was prosperous. Milos used to produce large quantities of obsidian, a volcanic rock used to construct weapons.
Being a rich island, the Athenians got interested in Milos whereby they forced the locals to pay an annual compensation to Athens. Milos island was taken over by Rome in the 2nd century BC and was one of the first Greek islands to be Christianized. In fact, an amazing set of catacombs have been unearthed close to Plaka, the capital of Milos island. The Turks established their rule here in 1537 and the island got its freedom from the Turkish rule in the 19th century, following the Greek War of Independence.
Over the last years, Milos island has developed a lot as a tourist destination. It amazes visitors with its black and white beaches, whose colors vary from light to deep blue, the picturesque villages and the wild landscape. The capital of Milos island is Plaka but the main port is Adamas.
The most tourist village is Pollonia, a lovely place on the north eastern side, whose small port serves ferries to Kimolos. However, the most characteristic village of the island is Klima, which features in most travel guides about Milos island. A small marina with two-storey buildings, colorful window shuts and fishing boats, Klima is a nice traditional place.
Both on the northern and the southern side, Milos island has some gorgeous beaches to visit. Agia Kiriaki, Firiplaka, Provatas and Paleochori, on the southern side, have amazing water and long shores. The beaches on the north are not that long and distinguish for their rocky geology, as is Sarakiniko and Parafrangas.
A site not to miss in Milos is Kleftiko, reached by tour boat that makes the tour of the island. Known as the Sea Meteora, Kleftiko impresses visitors with the caves, the upside down rocks and the crystal water. Of equal beauty is the close site of Gerontas. |
