The animals are kept in the terraced fields, far from town. The result of their activities are excellent dairy products –especially milk and cheese- a distinctive feature of many Greek islands, as well as great vegetables, fruits and nuts. Honey is also one of the main products of Kea, as well as its pork, which can be enjoyed at its excellent restaurants.
However, Kea stands out in the availability of the most basic good for people and animals: water. This is due to the several ancient springs found in and around the town, which are currently used as fountains;, the pureness of this water is superior to any bottled spring water. In fact, the springs are the reason why the town is placed where it is.
The biggest one, called the ‘Spring of Rocomenos’, can be found below its entrance, while the best tasting one can be found on the road to the Lion sculpture, laying outside Ioulida, and is the spring of Kourendis.
Although it is very common to see sheep, cows or horses drinking from the fountains outside the villages, this does not involve danger for humans; animals get their water from the tubs were the spring waters run off, while humans drink from the spring itself.
Fortunately, the island counts on enough stores to suit all the needs of visitors and locals, in some cases it is necessary just to look for them or to ask the locals |
