Kea is not much known to foreigners, it is like a paradise reserved for the Greeks only! I spent a week there two summers ago and had the chance to discover a really beautiful island! From one side, it is a shame that Kea is not much advertised to develop tourism and support the locals, but on the other side, it is nice that there is such a pure place so close to Athens (only one hour by ferry from the port of Lavrion and ferries are very frequent all day long).
The most popular beaches on Kea are Gialiskari and Koundouros, but there are many more isolate coves to discover. Ioulida is the capital, but it is not much developed. It resembles most to a village than a capital. Walk in the evening around the narrow streets, listen to the locals gossiping and see the view from the Castle. Right under the Castle, there is a small jewerly shop to buy some handmade pieces.
