The Monastery of Agia Anna in Kea Cyclades: The Byzantine Monastery of Agia Anna is set on top of a hill to the east of Ioulida town. It was built in the 16th century and played an important role in the 17th century, being a prominent monastery for Kea island. However, today it is abandoned. Its best preserved part is the church, which has been restored many times. The rest of the monastery just lies in ruins.
The monastery had three naves, which lead to three sanctums with three respective chancel tables, supported by parts of ancient columns, which shows the existence of an ancient temple on the site that is now occupied by the monastery. Along with the Monastery of Agia Anna, you can also visit the Monastery of Panagia Kastriani, which lies a few km away. |
