Ios Churches: Information about the churches of Ios Greece, Cyclades

Like all the Greek islands, an incredible amount of churches and monasteries can be seen in Ios.

Here are some of the many beautiful churches one can find in the main village, Hora, and across the rest of the island.

Panagia Gremiotissa

This lovely church is built on the highest point of the main village (Hora), in Ios.
Agios Ioannis Prodromos

This lovely tiny church has also been built in Hora. It is a typical Cycladic church painted in bright white, shining under the Mediterranean sun.

The Cathedral of Ios

Ruling the centre of Hora, the Cathedral of Ios is an imposing building, painted in the traditional Cycladic white colour. Its interior is beautifully decorated and has fine icons.
Agia Irene

This superb Byzantine church of great interest was built in the 17th century. It is located on the top of the harbour of Ormos and is reachable by a footpath.
Agia Irene is completely whitewashed and shines under the sunrays, contrasting with the pure blue colour of the sky and the reddish rocks around it.
It is visible from Yialos and is one of the first things the visitor sees when he arrives at Ios by the ferry.

It is a whitewashed church, very simple architecturally, with a white bell tower which has a blue painted little dome where a white cross stands.

The purity and austere character of its architecture make this church a real pleasure for the eye.

This typically Cycladic Church is recognizable by a beautiful palm tree standing on its side.

The incredibly beautiful church of Panaghia Gremiotissa is the trade mark of Ios, which makes it also the most photographed site of the island.

Agia Ekaterini

This church stands in Hora and has been built on the remains of an ancient town, on the same spot where it is believed that a temple of Pythian Apollo stood. Agia Ekaterini is a whitewashed church with an austere and elegant interior.

Panaghia Paleokastritissa

This tiny Byzantine whitewashed chapel is built on the eastern side of Ios, on the top of a small hill, in the middle of the ruins of a 19th century Venetian castle.

To reach this little beauty one has to take a footpath from the main road above Psathi, and walk for about 15 minutes.
