Churches in Folegandros

Folegandros is one of the best-preserved islands in the Cyclades, worth visiting for its Byzantine sites and picturesque quarters. Apart from the ancient temples found inside the medieval castle and its surroundings, the island is home to many churches reflecting the deep religious faith of the locals.

The church of Panagia (Virgin) is the most popular church in Folegandros, built over the ruins of the ancient sanctuary of Artemis, on top of a cliff, above Chora. It is accessible through an ascending path and the view is just breathtaking.

Beautifully designed inscriptions and elegant statues can be seen in the interiors of the church. The churches in the main village should not be missed. In the historical quarter of the castle are found the churches of Panagia Eleoussa (1530), Pantanassa and Agios Nikolaos, the Metropolis church of Folegandros.
