Folegandros Architecture

The architecture of Folegandros remains untouched by time and blends perfectly with the local environment. Chora, the capital of Folegandros, is ideally located on top of the hill and it is basically divided in two settlements: one that is built around the Venetian castle and the modern settlement just outside the fortified walls.

Throughout the centuries, Folegandros island is met with different civilizations, like the Venetians who stayed a long time on the island and left their traces. Examples of these traces are seen within and around the castle, the so-called medieval houses, which had small space and wide stairs. Most of them had a fireplace for heating and cooking and only a few mansions built in the 19th century have differences with the single roofed houses. Due to its fertile soil, Folegandros developed a type of urban architecture inspired by the locals' needs in their agricultural life. The island retains also its age-old customs, organizing many festivals, just like the rest of the Greek islands.

The most important characteristic though from the medieval era is the 13th-century castle, part of which hangs over the cliff and remains the trademark of Folegandros together with the Monastery of Panagia which lies on top of the hill. Numerous small churches scattered around the island constitute the symbols of Christianity and the strong religious faith of the locals. Another place worth visiting is the temple of Apollo in Paleokastro whereas a walk in Chora reveals many architectural treasures that can really impress you.

Visitors will find many Folegandros that have been created with respect to the traditional Cycladic architecture.
