My experience form Donoussa was about three summers ago. We actually spend a week in Naxos and 3 days on Donoussa, as the island is only 1 hour by ferry from Naxos. As it was June, Donoussa was almost empty. You could see only a few inhabitants in the coffee shops in the village and a couple of foreigners laying on the sandy beach close to the port. Things were absolutely quiet. In the afternoon, there were some children playing and cycling in the square. It must be hard for these children to live in Donoussa, I guess there is not many chances for education and entertainement there.
This small island gets very romantic in the evening when the sun set in the sea. To see the best sunset, climb up a hill above the village and reach Panagia church. We didn't go to any other beach, except for the one close to the port. Our hotel was there. It was hard to book a room through the Internet because most hotels in Donoussa are actually rooms to rent and open in early June. However, they have all tourist facilities: of course, do not expect pools and watersports, just a small and clean room to stay.
