 The lovely Church of Holy Cross in Donoussa Cyclades, Greece: The beautiful Church of the Holy Cross is found in the Town of Donoussa island and it is the protector of the island. Built in Cycladic architecture, the dominating colours of this church are white and blue. Next to the dome, there is a bell tower with three bells.
This church was built in 1902 to host the icon of the Holy Cross. The old church of Holy Cross was located close to a stream and it was drifted away during a heavy rainfall in the 19th century, along with the icon of the Holy Cross. This icon was found after few days in a beach in Amorgos and it was returned to Donoussa. The locals built this church to host the icon and there is a large religious celebration on September 14th. |
