More about: Andros island

The lighthouse Tourlitis right opposite Chora, the capital of Andros, will be the first Greek lighthouse to be emprinted on a stamp. The Greek Postal Authorities are launching a series of new stamps dedicated to the first lighthouses of Greece. This series presents five of the 120 traditional lighthouses of the Greek islands, unique monuments of architecture and history.

The lighthouse Tourlitis of Andros first operated in 1897 and was renovated in 1994. This is the first automatic lighthouse of the Greek lighthousing system, as the lighthouse keeper doesn't actually reside there but observes its function from away. Along with Tourlitis of Andros, four other lighthouses will be imprinted in stamps: the picturesque lighthouses of Syros, Paros, Chania and Kastelorizo.
