Andros has a wilder and more rocky landscape than the other Cyclades islands. Although it gets much popular in summer, it keeps its authentic beauty. Away from the tourist areas, there are small, isolate coves to enjoy a lot of privacy.
The busiest village of Andros is Gavrio, the port of the island, located on the north western. This is lovely, seaside village with many cafeterias and fishing taverns at the port. The busiest beaches close to Gavrio are Agios Petros and Kipri. They are both organized and have soft sand. These two are also the most popular beaches on the island.
In the afternoon, go to Batsi, the most tourist village of Andros. Built around a small bay, Batsi has small traditional houses and nice coves around to swim.
Two days in Andros: Chora |
1st day as described above.
Spend the second day in Chora, the capital of the island, on the eastern side. Walk along the paved paths and look at the famous lighthouse at the entrance of the small port. This was the first automatic lighthouse in Greece and has become the symbol of Andros over the years. Climb up to Rivas Square and see the statue of the Unknown Sailor. The view from up there is magnificent.
At this square, there is the interesting Nautical Museum that shows the rich maritime history of Andros. As you walk through the paths, you will also find the Modern Art Museum of Goulandris Foundation that frequently hosts interesting exhibitions. Chora also has a nice beach to swim but sometimes it gets too windy.
In the afternoon, drive to Menites, a traditional village in the inland, about 5 km west of Chora. This is an isolate village surrounded by much greenery and with some refreshing water springs closeby.
Three days in Andros: Ormos |
1st and 2nd days as described above.
On the third day, head south of Chora and visit Ormos. This seaside village doesn't receive much tourists and thus it is a relaxing place to enjoy the sea and the sun. The beach of Ornos is actually a large bay and the strong winds that usually blow in the area make it a nice windsurfing spot. On your way there, you will pass through a verdant valley called Dipotamata, that is crossed by a small river and has nice plants.
