Anafi Geography

Anafi is a small island of Cyclades, situated on the south-eastern side of the complex. The myth says that Anafi (whose name in Greek means this who emerged) has emerged from the bottom of the sea when the Argonauts threw a seed in the water. This indicates that the history of the island is probably connected with the eruption of the volcano of Santorini, in about 1,600-1,550 BC. The capital of Anafi is Chora, built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill with a view to the sea.

Agios Nikolaos is the main port, where ferries and fishing boat moor. The most developed part of Anafi is the southern part, where most beaches are located. These beaches are unorganized and can be accessed on foot or by boat.

The geography of Anafi will impress all visitors. They are sandy with crystal water and ideal for privacy. In general, Anafi is a great destination for total isolate vacations. The northern and the eastern part of Anafi Greece is crossed by beautiful trekking paths, that pass by gorgeous coasts, ancient sites and monasteries. Anafi is a hilly, not mountainous island. The highest peak is Agios Elios (or else Vigla) in the center, rising at an altitude of 582 m.
