The University Library has a large database with thousands of bibliographic records and often works closely with the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), on topics of research. Though fairly young, the University participates in European Union activities, such as ERASMUS, LINGUA and TEMPUS.
It also collaborates with Mediterranean and Eastern European countries and undertakes several research initiatives to promote its vibrant character.Rethymno city is rich in culture; in fact, its history starts back in the Mycenaean times and the city went through many occupations. The impact of the Venetian, Algerian, Ottoman, Russian and German occupations have been researched and preserved by the University, which in this way attracts tourists in the city.
Excavations in the ancient city of Eleftherna were conducted by the Department of Archaeology and History of Art, leading to the discovery of important ruins and remains of previous settlements.
The University also hosts theatre performances and art and exhibitions held all year round, in cooperation with the municipality and international private organizations. Its increasing student population contributes significantly to the economy of the city for the last 25 years.
