Plakias is a nice place to relax. If you really want to relax on Crete, go to the southern side. Villages are nicer there and more peaceful. On the northern side (Malia, Hersonissos, Elounda), resorts are busier due to the clubs.

Plakias, though, is small and cozy with picturesque beaches around it and delicious fish taverns by the beach. Grilled fish is expensive but worth it. I prefer it from fast food and pita gyros. Also note that apart from grilled fish and a couple other dishes, there are no vegetarian menus in Crete, and in Greece generally.

The beach of Plakias is clean and surrounded by huge rocks, so it doesn't get windy too frequently. The only thing to bothered me were the nudists: I was traveling with young kids and I didn't want my kids to see any nudist activity. I think there should be a special beach for these people, not close to families. Also I missed a tourism office. You can organize so many nice tours to landscapes and sights in Crete and you are mostly interested to promote clubbing.
