More about: Rethymno
The area of Rethymno is more quiet and traditional than Chania or Heraklion. We spent four days in Agia Galini last year, on our tour around Crete. This is a small fishing village actually but it has developed in tourism: a lot of rooms to rent, hotels, organized beaches, gift shops, but still not as crowded as Hersonissos.

The only difficult thing about Agia Galini is how you go there. It is located on the south of Rethymno and you had to follow some mountainous roads to go. Maps were not that helpful, we go lost a couple of times. Maps should actually suggest roads, not just show the roads, because some roads are actually awful and track, going up and down in the mountaiis, There may have been better roads from Hersonissos to Agia Galini but we didn't know them. Also something important: put signs in the crossroads!

Agia Galini had some beautiful beaches around it and some fine fish taverns in the small port. There were no monuments around, except for some monasteries but even some of them were abandoned. Things to do in Agia Galini: swimming, hiking and relaaaax...
