Our first trip to Crete was based on a recommendation from a friend. After that, we did not need any more recommendations. Having been to Crete more then 10 times, we just love the place. Crete is a fantastic island with all its historical monuments. We have seen most sites but not all. The beaches in Rethymnon are not the best in the world- too much stones/pebbles- but they work for us.
We love the countryside, in rented cars we have crisscrossed all over the island, been on the main roads but tried to spend most of the driving on the contry roads that have taken us to so many of the great villages on the island with all the extremely friendly people. We have been treated so well by the locals. Treat them with respect (it is their countr, we are just visiting) and you will be treated well, too.
After so many trips in Crete, we just love the food. We have found our favourite reastaurants and it is great to be welcomed back year on year. Greek salad is always good, saganaki is wonderfull and for a main course we can have stiffado, kleftiko, mixed grill, just to mention a few, and they all taste great. Encourage places like Rethymnon to not allow too many modern shops and restaurants. We come to the island to experience some of the greek lifestyle. It is not nice to see that some shops are owned by foreigners.
