More about: Rethymno
Having visited the suburb of Platanes several times, and stayed in different accomodation each time, we eventually happened upon the Marianthi apartments. They are small modest studios (only 10 rooms) and are of a familiarly basic standard. However, the hosts Nikos and Roussa Markoulakis and their 3 lovely daughters give everyone such a warm welcome, they engender a real family atmosphere. The weekly Mousaka night is every Thursday, and completely free to all guests, and Roussa's mousaka is the best I have ever tasted. All you pay for is your drinks from the bar which is also the cheapest one in the resort. If enough guests warrant it, Nikos also does a Sunday barbecue at 12 euros each, and for the amount of food on offer is very reasonable. Sure, most Greeks are friendly and hospitable, but Nikos and Roussa take this to another level.
On both nights, there is a real party atmosphere, and many guests return every year and many long friendships have been made.
Are we going back next year? DEFINITELY !
