Helona in Rethymno
Helona is a beautiful tavern located in the Venetian harbor of Rethymnon, overlooking the sea and the picturesque fishing boats. The restaurant opened its doors in 1965 offering a large dining area that can accommodate nearly 170 people. The menu stands out for its special varieties in fish and seafood. The owner has a private boat that brings in the best catch from the Cretan Sea, so that visitors can choose their meal.
The restaurant preserves its traditional style and the menu has both international and Cretan dishes. Dishes, like lamb kleftiko, soutzoukakia, pastitsio and the fisherman salad, are among the Cretan specialties. Some of the best wines and local drinks are served here to accompany your meal, including white, red and rose wines from the local vineyards of Crete. The friendly atmosphere and the spectacular views to the sea create a unique dining experience.

I have visited the Helona restaurant many times. My last visit was in April 2012. Helona is situated in the old Venetian Harbour close to the water with a spectacular view out to the harbour. From the restaurant you can see the picturesque fishing boats. You can also see when the sea trips start from the harbour with the big ships. On the menue are meat and fish but the restaurant is very famous for fish and seafood. The restaurant has both international and Cretan dishes. The fisherman salad is among the Cretan specialties. The food is very good and the atmosphere in the restaurant is excellent. They have a large choise of different white, red and rose wines and many are from the local wineyards of Crete. The waiters are very friendly and professional and they take care of the customers in a very nice way. If you will visit Rethymno go to this nice restaurant I am sure that you will like it.
