The most famous beach of Lassithi Crete is probably Vai, a sandy beach on the north eastern side of the prefecture that hosts the largest palm tree forest in Europe. It is said that this palm forest was created in the Medieval times when Phoenician merchants threw their seeds from the dates they were eating. Till few decades ago, Vai was very popular for camping, but today this beach has been declared a protected region and spending overnight there is prohibited.
The eastern side of Lassithi Crete is totally peaceful and unexplored. Most frequented resort is Palekastro, ideal for windsurfing due to the strong winds that blow in the region, but there are also small coves to enjoy total privacy.
The southern side of Lassithi Crete dominates from Ierapetra, the most famous resort in the region. With lovely beaches around, a fortress at the entrance of the port and fish taverns along the waterfront, Ierapetra is an ideal family place. From there, boats leave for the small island of Chrissi, with the exotic blue green water. Other resorts in southern Lassithi Crete are Makrigialos and Agia Fotia. Boats from Makrigialos go to the deserted island of Koufonisia. |
