The town of Heraklion is only an hour away(65 kilometres) from Agios Nikolaos and regular boat are linking the town to the harbour of Piraeus during the summer season.
Agios Nikolaos has been built on the site of the ancient town of Lato. The town flourished during the 3rd century BC. It was an autonomous city which minted its own coins and kept flourishing and expanding during the Roman and Early Byzantine periods.
During the Venetian rule, the Mirabello (Lovely View) Fortress was built on a hill, to protect the small harbour. There aren’t any remains from this construction and the only thing reminding the existence of this construction is the name of the bay once dominated by the fortress.
During the Turkish domination the town was inhabited but its harbour was used. A small settlement started to develop around the port during the last years of the Turkish rule.
This settlement was called Agios Nikolaos because of the old and lovely domed church which stood on the peninsula of the port.
